To ensure safety in the workplace for the therapist and customer, there are legislations in place that provide guidelines for this. These include the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, the Electricity at Work Act 1992, and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002.
To ensure their own health and safety, and that of the customer, the therapist must:
- Follow the health and safety procedures that their employer has provides
- Protect themselves and others
- Handle all equipment properly and report any faults to the manager
- Ensure that sockets are not overloaded
- Check electrical equipment before use
- Liquids should not be placed near electrical equipment
- Follow set precautions for hazardous substances
On the other hand, the employers should provide the following:
- A health and safety policy
- Access to safety procedures such as fire exits
- Adequate training for staff
- A safe workspace that meets health requirements including adequate ventilation, lighting, toilet facilities etc.
