History of makeup treatment (Accredited)

The history of makeup dates back to ancient Egypt where makeup kits were found in Egyptian tombs. Makeup in ancient Egypt was seen as a marker of wealth and was believed to appeal to the gods. Egyptian art also presents men and women wearing eyeliner as early as 4000 BCE. Kohl, rouge and white powders were used to lighten the skin and malachite eyeshadow which represented the gods Horus and Re were popular. Cleopatra also used hue extracted from ground beetles as lipstick. As time passed, there was a pattern of rejecting and accepting makeup.

During the Elizabethan era, having pale skin was in vogue, and only lower class women coloured their skin. However, in the early 20th century, makeup products such as lipstick re-entered mainstream market  and the modern makeup industry emerged and thrived.
